Making trans and
non-binary inclusion
work in the real world

Gender diversity in the workplace can become a human resources, operational, or people issue very quickly.

An employee comes out as trans or non-binary and their manager isn't sure what to do. A policy needs updating. A first name doesn't match a legal name. Staff disagree about washroom access. A hiring practice creates an unexpected barrier.

That's where TransFocus comes in.

As a consultancy specializing in transgender and non-binary inclusion, we help employers, HR teams and leaders make clear, practical decisions—and put them into practice with confidence.

When should you bring in a trans inclusion expert?

Gender identity and expression are protected under human-rights legislation across Canada. But knowing that is only the starting point.

The harder questions are often practical:

  • What should a manager do when an employee comes out or transitions?

  • Are our policies and practices meeting our human-rights responsibilities?

  • When is someone's legal name actually required and where should someone’s chosen name be used?

  • How should we respond to concerns about washrooms or changerooms?

  • Are our hiring practices, forms or systems creating barriers?

  • What do we do when employees strongly disagree about trans inclusion?

  • How do we implement decisions consistently across an organization?

Your HR, legal, and operational teams already bring considerable expertise. TransFocus complements that expertise when a gender-related situation requires specialized knowledge.

We help translate human-rights requirements and organizational commitments into workable policies, practices, communications, and everyday decisions.

And we help organizations identify problems they may not otherwise see. Trans and non-binary employees don't always report the barriers they experience—and they shouldn't have to become your organization's trans-inclusion experts in order for those barriers to be addressed. We use surveys, interviews, focus groups, site visits, and other forms of research to understand what's actually happening and identify practical opportunities for improvement.

You don't need to wait for a complaint or crisis to find out whether your organization is ready.

Two ways we help: trans inclusion consulting and gender diversity training

Gender-diversity challenges generally require work in one—or both—of two places:

Puzzle pieces: Culture + Structure

Improve Culture: gender diversity training

Training that builds knowledge, confidence, and practical skills

Our gender diversity training helps employees and managers understand gender diversity and respond appropriately in everyday workplace situations.

Choose from two levels depending on where your people are starting—from foundational understanding to more complex workplace application, delivered live or online

Improve Structures: policy and strategy consulting

Strategy for the policies, practices, and systems that shape people's experiences

Strategy sessions can address issues such as:

  • trans-inclusive policies and workplace practices

  • employee transitions

  • first names and gender information

  • Inclusive recruitment and hiring

  • washrooms and change rooms

  • resistance or conflicting views

  • implementation of organizational decisions

Best when:

“Our people need greater knowledge and confidence to put inclusion into practice.”

Best when:

“We're facing an issue and aren't sure what the best approach is.”

Trans inclusion in practice: a client example

Hockey Canada Logo

Hockey Canada: From policy to implementation

The challenge wasn't simply having good policies. They needed to work across a national network.

TransFocus:

  • reviewed and provided feedback on the new policies

  • helped develop communications addressing frequently asked questions

  • designed custom gender diversity training to support implementation

  • delivered 15 training sessions to approximately 1,000 attendees from Minor Hockey Associations across Canada

  • Work spanned from May 2023 to August 2024

Strategy improved the structures.

Education helped people put them into practice.

Calm, practical support for complex issues

Clients consistently describe our approach as approachable, collaborative, practical and knowledgeable.

That's intentional.

Gender-related issues can involve uncertainty, strong opinions and competing considerations. We create space for people to ask questions, raise concerns and work through difficult trade-offs without blame or polarization stalling progress.

Calm doesn't mean avoiding difficult issues. It means creating the conditions to solve them.
