About TransFocus

Trans and non-binary inclusion specialists since 2016.

TransFocus helps organizations turn commitments and human-rights responsibilities related to gender diversity into workplace practices that actually work.

TransFocus began in 2016 after a year-long volunteer project to make recreation more inclusive of trans and non-binary people sparked an unexpected wave of requests from other organizations. They wanted help turning inclusive intentions into better everyday experiences for their employees and the people they serve. That's been our focus ever since.

For more than 10 years, leaders of organizations have brought us questions that don't always have quick answers:

  • How should we support an employee who is coming out as trans at work?

  • Does this policy work for trans and non-binary people?

  • How should we handle first names and gender data?

  • What do we do when employees disagree about trans inclusion?

  • How should we approach washrooms and change rooms?

  • How do we turn a decision or policy into consistent practice across an organization?

These situations can involve HR, human rights, operations, facilities, communications, and organizational culture at the same time.

That's why TransFocus specializes.

Rather than providing broad equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) consulting, we focus deeply on the policies, practices, systems, and everyday interactions that affect trans and non-binary people.

What makes our trans inclusion consulting and training different?

TransFocus helps organizations turn their commitment to trans and non-binary inclusion into everyday practices that work for employees, customers, and the people responsible for delivering them.

  • Specialized expertise: We focus specifically on trans and non-binary inclusion, bringing deep experience with the questions, challenges, and decisions organizations encounter.

  • Practical solutions: We translate complex issues into clear, workable steps that account for human rights, organizational realities, and the people affected.

  • Collaborative approach: We meet people where they are, without judgment. We work alongside internal teams, building on their knowledge rather than replacing it.

  • Evidence-informed recommendations: We draw on research, consultation, and experience across hundreds of organizations to develop recommendations grounded in real-world needs.

Whether we're helping an organization navigate a specific challenge or strengthen its overall approach, our goal is the same: make inclusion easier to understand, implement, and sustain.

We look beyond what reaches HR

No complaints doesn't necessarily mean no barriers.

Trans and non-binary employees may choose not to raise workplace challenges because doing so could require disclosing personal information, drawing attention to their gender, or taking the risk that their concern won't be understood.

And employees who do identify barriers shouldn't have to become their organization's gender-diversity experts in order to solve them.

That's why our work doesn't rely solely on reported problems.

Depending on the project, we use surveys, interviews, focus groups, policy reviews, site visits and other forms of consultation to understand what's actually happening and identify practical opportunities for improvement.

We listen carefully to the people affected while keeping responsibility for solving organizational problems where it belongs: with the organization.
